I tried something new yesterday. I got home from work, checked my email, and then put my phone away. I decided I spend way to much time mindlessly scrolling though my phone at night after work. I don’t need to open Instagram every 5 minutes. Most of the time I don’t even realize I’m staring at my phone or reopening an app I checked minutes ago.
I also recruited Connor to do the same. Around 5pm, we did put our phones away. Connor worked from home and I got home a bit early, so it was nice to have so much time away from my phone, social media, emails, etc.
Connor did some dishes and I made us moscow mules. We had dinner. It wasn’t the best, but we worked with what we had. This was mostly because we didn’t have a lot of groceries, but I wasn’t about to go to Aldi in the negative temperatures. But regardless, we had dinner and drank our yummy drinks. Then we watched some of New Girl, which is the show we are currently watching.
Watching TV might seem pretty close to staring at our phones, but I know I actually paid attention to the show. I feel like half the time I am watching something, I am barely paying attention. My phone is usually there to distract me. All in all, it was a successful night. I think it could have been a bit different if the weather was better. We could have left the apartment, gone for a walk, or just explored. But I’d say we did alright!
I’m not necessarily going to put my phone away every day, but I do want to be more mindful of the time I spend on it. Being in the present, actually talking, or even just paying attention to a show I like, can be a lot more fun that checking social media all of the time.
One random thing I want to add– I had no idea what time it was the whole night. I saw the time and it was only 7pm and it felt like 9pm. I’m not sure if I liked that or not because I was pretty tired, but going to bed at 7 would have been a bit too early.
Do you feel like you spend a lot of time on your phone? If so, what apps do you check most often? What are your favorite ways to step away from your phone or computer?
