How I Got Into Running

I wish the cover photo was my first ever pair of running shoes.

I remember doing little races in 4th and 5th grade and being decent at running. I remember meeting the high school and middle school girls who volunteered at the races and thinking they were pretty cool and seemed good at running.

Next thing I know, I’m at the running store in my hometown with my mom getting fitted for my first real pair of running shoes, and picking out a running outfit that wasn’t just a t-shirt and shorts. My first shoes were yellow Asics I believe. I got a light blue tank top and some black shorts to go with it. For some reason I didn’t love the outfit. Looking back, from what I am picturing, it was kind of cute!

After getting some new gear, I was ready for my first day of practice. I did not want to go to my first practice. I hadn’t even gone to my first day of middle school yet so the whole experience was pretty new. I remember standing in line next to some familiar faces and a bunch of strangers who ended up being some of my best friends (some still are). We went on a short run and stopped in the middle for a little chat with the coaches.

Our head coach was super nice and my first season with him was his last season coaching cross country. He ended up being one of my teachers later on though! I remember him listing off some expectations and mentioning how soda was bad for you and wouldn’t help you be a better runner. The moment he said that I stopped drinking soda. Random, but I’ll never forget it.

The first practice ended and I never really stopped running from then on. It’s crazy to think joining the cross country team, something I really didn’t want to do, ended up being a huge part of my life and shaping who I am today. So there ya have it. That is the story of how I got into running!

How did you get into running? Do you remember your first pair of running shoes?

  1. I got on the running bandwagon late. I started in college because I felt unathletic living with three athletes and dating one at the time haha. My first real pair of running shoes are the ones I use now, three/fourish years later. What’s the rule for running shoes? How often should you be replacing them? I have Asics and they’re great but don’t know if I should look into a new pair for next year.

    1. I used to be super good about getting new running shoes. They can just get so expensive. When I was running daily (or like 5 days a week) and putting it a bunch of miles I’d get a new pair every 6 months or so. To be honest, the shoes I’m wearing now probably have 1000s miles on them because I trained for a half in them and ran in them ever since. I think around every 500ish miles is a good time to get news ones from what I remember!
